White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany hailed the Big Ten's decision to resume college football this fall, saying President Donald Trump is "happy to get this thing going." Less than five weeks after pushing fall sports to spring in the name of player safety during the pandemic, the conference changed course Wednesday and said it plans to open its football season the weekend of Oct. 23-24. McEnany also disputed the timeline of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield for a widely available COVID vaccine, insisting again that a vaccine will be available "by the end of the year." Testifying before Congress Wednesday, Redfield made clear that any version available this year would be in “very limited supply.” The shot wouldn’t be broadly available to most of the U.S. population until the summer of 2021, he estimated. McEnany resisted that assessment, saying again, "we still feel we are on the right timeline." The press secretary was also asked to clarify comments President Trump's position on mask wearing as a means of protecting against the coronavirus. During an ABC News town hall Tuesday night, Trump was unclear about his position, saying, "there are people that don't think masks are good." McEnany said Trump does in fact believe that "mask wearing is good," but was just "referring to the fact that when used appropriately, they can have unintended consequences."
