Just when some thought Congress's push to force a sale of TikTok or see it banned in the United States had fizzled out, a new strategy has emerged on Capitol Hill that could fast-track the legislation to the president's desk. As House Speaker Mike Johnson moves ahead with bills to aid Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, they're expected to be accompanied by an updated bill to force TikTok to be sold by its Beijing-based parent company ByteDance. A bill on this already passed the House last month with overwhelming support and has been idling in the Senate ever since with no clear path toward passage. Now that the updated version extends the period ByteDance has to divest from roughly six months to up to a year, key players like Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Chair Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., are on board.
